Establishment of the Michigan Aerial Imagery Partnership (MAIP)

Recognizing the need for current, high resolution imagery, the Michigan Aerial Imagery Partnership (MAIP) - a partnership of seven state agencies and the MSU Land Policy Program and Remote Sensing & GIS Research and Outreach Services - was formed in Fall, 2004. This partnership, lead by the Land Policy Program and Remote Sensing and GIS Research and Outreach Services of Michigan State University and Michigan Departments of Environmental Quality (DEQ), Natural Resources (DNR), Transportation (MDOT), and Labor and Economic Growth (DLEG), and Michigan Center for Geographic Information (CGI), collaborated with Federal Agencies to have statewide aerial imagery generated by the U.S. Farm Service Agency (FSA) National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) for the state of Michigan. Through partnership, it is estimated that this significant imagery set will be generated at a cost savings of over $2 million. Scheduled for acquisition in summer, 2005, the imagery will provide 1-meter resolution, mid-growing season (leaf-on), color infrared photography for the entire state. Preliminary imagery products will become available within 90 days of the flight, with FSA certified products, meeting U.S. spatial accuracy and spectral quality standards, within 7 - 9 months after the flight.
